May 03, 2018

Magdalena Serrano has been an Academic Adviser at Merrill College since September 2014. On April 30th, she joined the Orientation Office as the Assistant Director of Orientation. Magdalena has a passion for working with students and helping them reach their goals. Her goal is help empower students to become advocates for their educational journeys.

She was recently recognized for her willingness to help bring her colleagues on board, with one remarking “Magdalena has been a great help in getting me set-up logistically to work most efficiently within the office. I am most appreciative of Magdalena's guidance and availability for consultation on specific student cases.” In addition, Magdalena assisted with the planning committee for the Winter Advising Forum, where she was lauded for her work planning “an interesting and fun event, full of important and timely information for campus advisers.”

Magdalena was born and raised in Watsonville, CA. She is the proud daughter of her immigrant parents who always pushed her to obtain a college education and pursue opportunities that they did not have access to. She graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2012 and then graduated from San Diego State with a Master of Arts in Education in Postsecondary Educational Leadership with Specialization in Student Affairs in 2014.

Magdalena married her high school sweetheart in 2016. Magdalena and her husband enjoy going to baseball games, spending time with their Chihuahua Bubbles, spending time outside working out, and relaxing with family.

Thank you, Magdalena, for going the extra mile!
