The Division of Undergraduate Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Greer Murphy as UC Santa Cruz’ first Director of Academic Integrity, effective May 2, to lead the creation, launch, and management of the new UC Santa Cruz Academic Integrity Office.

Greer’s extensive 15-year background in higher education, spanning policy development, applied linguistics, writing education, and faculty development, uniquely positions them to build the foundation for the Academic Integrity Office. Greer has most recently served as Director of Academic Honesty, Policy & Education at the University of Rochester in New York since 2021, and brings a vision for academic integrity to UC Santa Cruz of inclusivity and collaboration.

“Above all, my vision for academic integrity at Santa Cruz is a participatory one,” said Greer. “A campus culture of integrity—maintaining a collective courage to abide by shared values like responsibility, respect, fairness, and trust—can really only thrive once everyone gets off the sidelines, rolls up their sleeves, and commits to doing the work. We must listen to each other and voice our opinions, even–perhaps especially–when those opinions don’t initially align.”

Greer holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from UCLA, a Master’s in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. They currently serve on the leadership team of the International Center for Academic Integrity’s Board of Directors.

Greer says their journey into academic integrity was unexpected, “I have a background in applied linguistics and the teaching of writing, among other things, and for a while I really wasn’t sure I wanted to be known as the ‘plagiarism lady’—but a very wise mentor helped me see the need for leadership, listening, and advocacy in this area and, importantly, helped me understand how my particular set of skills, priorities, and interests align with this work. I’ve never looked back.”

In spearheading the reimagining of academic integrity at UC Santa Cruz, with a central emphasis on student-centered learning, mentorship, and restorative practices, Greer is deeply committed to transparency and earning the trust of the Santa Cruz community. They said, “I am dedicated to ensuring students have meaningful input in the academic integrity process and will prioritize forging partnerships with colleagues across campus to realize this vision.”

Greer already feels connected to the university, thanks to a special family tie: their brother is a proud Banana Slug from Rachel Carson College, Class of 2007.

Thanks to the hiring committee for their diligent efforts in selecting Greer for this critical role. Greer's depth of experience and passion for academic integrity will make them an invaluable addition to the UC Santa Cruz community. Please extend a warm welcome to Greer Murphy (gramurph@ucsc.edu).
